The working group consists of learners and staff from our subsidiaries and transitional industry training organisations, together with representatives from national student associations.
A series of wānanga with this group are being held throughout April and May to consider how we set up this committee and ensure that we strengthen learner voice throughout the country. We’re also exploring things like what existing learner voice systems and structures work well, how should the committee work with other groups, what principles should we follow, and how do we select learners to be on this committee?
Deputy Chief Executive Tania Winslade says “The committee will provide a strong voice for learners across our network - up to 280,000 learners by 2023 who have an interest in everything from nursing, plumbing, to personal training. Understanding how best to represent the views of learners currently underserved by the system is a top priority”.
At the end of the first wānanga learners shared one word that summed up their day. The words included hopeful, inspired, tough, choice, whanaungatanga and empowered.
“We will be seeking wider feedback from learners on the committee over the coming months and we hope to have a final structure agreed by August,” Tania says.
