Mauri ora — the freedom of cultural expression and identity
Mauri ora is our state of being, where our life force is in balance, we are alive, well and full of vitality. When your mauri is supported and enhanced you can confidently express your cultural identity in all spaces and places, no matter who you are or where you are from.
“It’s really beautiful to be in kaupapa Māori spaces. It enhances every aspect of you. You learn more about yourself, how you are in the world. That’s what culture brings.”
Ways to connect to this whetū
Take some time out to visit a place that is special to you and your identity (marae, urupā, whare karakia/church). You may have a cultural support person who you can reach out to if you need some guidance.
If you can, find others in your community, place of study or work who speak or are learning the same language or dialect as you. It can be helpful to have others to speak to.
“It's very important for me to feel a connection to my turangawaewae or whenua. I believe, if you don't have a connection to your turangawaewae, you can feel lost.”
